Reader’s Question:

I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer here in North Dakota and I was wondering if I would still qualify for life insurance coverage?

It is still possible to get life insurance coverage if you were diagnosed with cancer depending on the type of cancer you have, its progress and whether or not you are already undergoing treatment. Most of the time though you will find it very difficult (or nearly impossible) to convince life insurance providers to give you coverage, while you are actually undergoing medical treatment. Certain type’s breast cancer for example, can be issued a standard life insurance policy with no additional premiums to be paid if you show strong signs of recovery and the said tumor is localized and can be taken cared of by undergoing surgery. (You or your doctor would probably need to submit all the medical and treatment history for evaluation)

You may also find some life insurance providers there in North Dakota that would be willing to provide coverage immediately after treatment, but would have a small premium added on the policy for a few years. This is additional security on the life insurance’s behalf and should be removed once you have shown signs of complete recovery and there would be no danger of the cancer growing back. It usually takes about two or three years of observation for someone who have had cancer treatment to be tagged as cancer-free. Of course it would still be beneficial to shop around and be aware of your options there. Just because you have cancer it doesn’t have mean that one should be over-charged for life insurance.
